As part of our first day in Edmonton, we snagged a few minutes of our MLA, Dr. David Swann's time for a photo opportunity on the beautiful marble staircase of the Legislature, just outside the chamber.

Edmonton blog posts by Shahyd & Raaniya coming soon! Blog Post by Mahamed & Aaron: From June 4-7, 6-204 and 6-210 went to Edmonton. On our first day in Edmonton, from Calgary we drove straight to the Federal building then walked to the Legislature. We then went to the Education Center in the Federal building where we had a debate if free range parenting should be legal. We were debating this bill that would allow children to have more freedom, make their own decisions, and be more independent. When we arrived at the Legislature, we got a tour of the building and learned that the construction started in 1907 and ended in 1912. Before we left, we had a picture with our constituent’s MLA, Dr. David Swann. He came to our school in April and talked to us about his role in the provincial government. When we finished it was time to go to the Bennett Center which is where we stayed overnight, ate our meals, and where we had an Evidence and Investigation morning. Todd was a Bennett Center staff member. He helped us get organized with our roommates and helped us learn how to serve our bunk members’ their meals and clean up after meal time. On the fourth and final day of our trip we went to the municipal building. The municipal building was a lot better than the one in Calgary and it had a swimming pool that was under construction. We also got a tour of the building and went to their council chamber. Today, we set up a giant air foil/airplane wing demonstration to help us understand Bernoulli's Principle. The pylons showed the cross section of an airplane wing where as the dodge balls represented air molecules. We learned that Bernoulli understood that as the speed of air increases, the pressure decreases. This inverse relationship is also true when there is low air speed, creating high air pressure. In order to create the force of lift on an air foil, air must flow over a curved surface quickly, creating low air pressure; where as the air on the bottom of an air foil or a flat surface creates low air speed and therefore high air pressure. This difference in air pressure creates lift on an airplane.
On Saturday, April 28, 2018 I went to Comicon, before I Went to Comicon I had to pick up my friend Daniel from his house. After we got there we had to meet up with one of my dads friends named Steve. He has a daughter named Edie, after we found them at the bouncy castle we went walking around we saw a whole bunch of people dressed up as anime people definitely a lot of Naruto because my friend kept pointing them out. I also saw people dressed up as characters from video games like Fallout 4, and even ARK. Daniel and I saw some swords while we were looking for Steve and Edie so we went on a hunt to find the swords, and finally found the swords that we were looking for, so we got the swords. I also saw a Shuriken necklace and I got that to.
Sorry I don’t have any photos Overall, I had a great time and I hope to go again. Luke On May 1st, 2018, 6-204 went to a Pow Wow Workshop at the Niitsitapi Learning Centre.
When we got there, we went in the gymnasium and put our things away. From there, we went and sat down and listened to the instructions and Elder Goodeagle’s opening prayer and a smudge. Firstly, we went to the dancing room and got into three groups, each group had a dance instructor and we learned three moves from each dance instructor. After, we went to a drumming place in the gym and we heard three men drumming. One of the drummers told us a story about how little kids learn the Pow Wow songs by learning to the tune of “Old McDonald Had a Farm” and the “Chicken Dance” to inspire them to sing. When they finished, each person got to hit the drum as hard as they could and then we had to go to the next station. Lastly we went to a room and Elder Goodeagle who told us about his life, his responsibilities as an Elder, and his Blackfoot traditions. He also talked to us about headdresses and how the black and white one is the highest headdress you could get. Overall, the Pow Wow Workshop was really fun and I’m looking forward to going to the ceremony at Crescent Heights High School. By: Mahamed Mohamoud Yesterday, grade 6 students had the opportunity to visit the Niitsitapi Learning Centre to attend a series of Pow Wow Workshops. After this experience, we asked ourselves - "What stuck with us most? What do we think is most important to share with others?" Here are our thoughts below.
The Niitsitapi Learning Centre
Ceremonies & Pow Wows
Dancing
Drumming
Elder Goodeagle
Although yesterday was one unique opportunity to learn from Indigenous teachings, we feel as though it is important to keep learning from each other and share this with our community. Ways we can experience this together is to encourage more people to attend Pow Wows, talk about our experiences with others, show others the social dances we learned, to try to learn more Blackfoot, to take pride in and respect our environment, encourage others to go for a tour of the Niitsitapi Learning Centre, and invite musicians and singers to visit our music class. Lastly, we've come to realize that we have a lot to learn from Elder Goodeagle and other Elders. We wish we had more time! For your next opportunity to attend a Pow Wow, Crescent Heights High School will be hosting one on May 17th at 6pm. On Friday, April 20th, 2018, my sister, my mom, my aunt, and I all travelled to Regina, Saskatchewan for our Taek-Won-Do tournament.
We left Calgary on Friday around 8:50 am. We arrived in Regina at 10:00 am. When we arrived in Regina we rented a car, and realized it was still too early to go to our hotel, so we went for a short drive to a popular mall there that is called Cornwall Centre, which is somewhat like Chinook Centre. On our way we passed the Mosaic Stadium, which is the CFL football stadium. When we arrived at the Cornwall Center we all realized that we just drove around all of DownTown Regina, Regina is a small city. We finally arrived at our hotel at around 2:00pm. When we got to our hotel my sister and I went swimming at the pool in our hotel. When we were done swimming my sister and I practiced our patterns a few times before our big competition the next day. Saturday April 21st, 2018, was the big day! We arrived at the Field House Centre for our competition at around 8:15 am for the Opening Ceremonies. After the Opening Ceremonies they started to call groups up to get ready to start competing. My sister Jannah went at around 9:45 am and I watched her I thought she did really good. She ended up winning silver in sparring. I went at 11:30 am, and I ended up winning a bronze medal also sparring. After we received our medals, even though they weren't gold medals we were still very happy and quite proud of our results. When we got back to our hotel we started to pack up most of our stuff to get ready to leave back to Calgary the next morning. We weren’t very excited to hear that our flight was at 5:00 am so that meant we needed to wake up at 3:00 am. We were very tired when we got back, but that didn’t stop us from going to the pool. After the pool we then got ready for a Banquet Dinner that was for the competitors at the tournament and their families. Overall, it was a very good experience for us and we had lots of fun! Thank You! -Shahyd Over the Spring Break, my family and I woke up super early to get on our plane, to go to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. My family and I took a taxi to the villa in Bucarias. Our villa had a pool, a little bar, and some cool animals. There were 6 units and most of the other people staying there were from Canada too. We saw cats, lizards, and plenty of different types of bright colored birds.
We then went for dinner at a seafood place. It was a really quiet night, people wise, but there was plenty of birds and crickets making noise. Even though it was late and getting dark, it was still over 20 degrees outside. The next day we went to the beach and walked down quite aways to the massive Wibit on the ocean. The Wibit is like a massive floating play area on the water. My brother didn't enjoy it as much as I did. You can see me flying off the Wibit airbag in the picture! After our long walk, we went to an awesome italian place with dining tables in a beautiful tropical garden. On our fourth day, we went to a spectacular beach called Destilladeras beach, the waves were really nice and we made a massive array of cool sand sculptures. On our sixth day, we went to a waterpark/aquarium called Splash it was really fun, one of the slides went through a shark tank, my brother got stuck on the shark slide and I had to go down and give him a kick. We also got to hold parrots, snakes, and a shark. On our last full day of Mexico, my dad did a bike tour and my mom, my brother, and I went to an all inclusive resort by Destilladeras, the pool there was separated into three parts with waterfalls cascading from one pool to the next it was super picturesque. On our last day , we went to the farmers market and picked out some souvenirs to bring back to Calgary. By: Ana **Photos coming soon On Thursday April 5th, both grade six classes went to the Calgary airport to visit Spaceport.
When we arrived, we were told to put away our things and bring a pencil. We were then told to go into this room where we learned about two space shuttles that malfunctioned, The Columbia and Challenger. The Columbia’s heat shield broke when they were leaving the atmosphere. The crew tried to repair it but on re-entry the shuttle burned up. In the Challenger’s case a peice called the o ring broke causing the fuel to mix to early and the shuttle exploded. After the presentation where we learned about: the Wright brothers, Boeing amd just the history of aviation in general, we were split into five different groups. Each group studied a different topic - which control surfaces do what, angle of attack, wing camber, air pressure, and comparing spacecraft to aircraft. When we finished with the groups, we went back to our class groups. Our class first went to the Starlab which was in a big inflatable dome with a light that shone through different paper canisters to display constellations on the ceiling, the other class learned about rockets and answered questions. After we switched places and we went to go learn about rockets and the other class went to the big tent and they learned about constellations at the Starlab. During the time where we learned about rockets they taught us about newton’s laws of motion: an object at rest will stay at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force, how far an object moves is relative to the amount of mass times acceleration applied to it, and for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. During a demonstration explaining Newton's second law of motion, they shot Mahamed with foam balls, one of which had wood in it, to see which one would go farther. For the last fifteen minutes we had free time to explore the exhibits, such as, that told you you weight on earth mars and the moon, a display where you could control variables to get a rocket to the ISS and there were lots of video games, although not many of them were related to aircraft/spacecraft. Overall Spaceport was really fun and we hope we get to go there again. By: Mahamed & Noah On April 5, 2018 all of grade six went to Spaceport. When we got there first we ate snack then we got together and put our stuff away. After we had a presentation about aircraft and a little bit about spacecraft. Some of the things we learned and there dates are November 21, 1738 Pilatre de Rozier and Marquis d'Arlandes made the first air balloon. November 13, 1907 Paul Cornu built the first helicopter.
Commercial airplane, military planes, arrow space Airbus A 380 is a double decker airplane it is one of the largest airplanes ever made. We heard that unfortunately, the Airbus A 380 can’t be landed at the International Calgary Airport due to our airport’s size and the plane being just too BIG. The Wright Brothers made $30 000 for their first aircraft that's could fly at 64 km per hour, they made $29 000 from this deal because they only spent $1 000 on the aircraft. Three very brilliant men made aerospace possible Isaac Newton, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky NASA launched its shuttle program in 1972 The SpaceShipOne was the first privately built aircraft run by someone who was in a contest to win $10 000 000 if their aircraft makes it so space. After lunch we went to the Star Lab tent where we saw different constellations and the backstory about them. One I thought was interesting was Ophiuchus. Have you ever seen the snake wrapped around a stick on a EMS or at the doctors office? The backstory was about a boy and he was a doctor so he needed medicine. He went to the woods and saw a plant he had never seen before, and all of a sudden a snake started attacking him and he smacked the snake to its death. When the sake died another snake got that weird plant and feed it to the dead snake and it became alive. After we switched with the other class we were listening to a presentation while the other class was in the star lab. In the presentation we learned about Newton's Laws and spacecraft. The three Newton's Laws are:
